The ever-changing surroundings, the magnificent views, the sights and sounds of historic steam and new biodiesel locomotives in action, and some of the steepest railroad tracks in existence, combine to place it among the best of the world’s great railway journeys. This is a trip that must be made to be fully appreciated! In 1869, the Cog Railway was an engineering marvel, a new technology of toothed cog gears, rack rails and tilted boilers.

Today, when you ride the train you get a rare look at this world gone by, where coal fired dreams and steel rails mapped the course of civilization. Plan on spending a day at the Cog Railway. There’s a fascinating gift shop and restaurant at the base. On the summit, you can visit New Hampshire’scograil1 unique mile-high state park, including the Sherman Adams Summit Building and Observatory Museum.

The Cog Railway is set in the midst of the White Mountain National Forest with its natural and man-made attractions. It may well be the most unique vacation experience in all New England. The round trip cog ride takes approximately three hours, including a 1-Hour stop at the summit.
